A different view...

When I was young my dad told me the stories of hardship growing up in a rural Irish town back in the 1940's. Stories about carrying his shoes around his neck on the walk to school and only putting them on as he approached the building. All to save the leather. There were many more stories but the moral was always the same. I just didn't know how lucky I was...

I grew up in Ireland in the 1970's. Attended an all girls school run by nuns. After school I regularly walked to the local bus stop being buffeted by wind and rain. I had shoes on my feet and my dads words rang in my ears. I just didn't know how lucky I was...

Fast forward to the year 2013. Tonight I saw a photo my lovely Rhiannon had put on Instagram...

This is her experience of school. She's come a long way from her Grandad trudging uphill through the snow in both directions. She's come a long way from her mother being battered by the bitter Irish weather. I think I've turned into my Father. All I could think as I looked at this photo was...

She just doesn't know how lucky she is...

  1. Wow--I agree! Looks wonderful!

My son and I were just talking about how it is funny how we recognize our parents in ourselves and our mannerisms and the things that we say...

    ((hugs))

  2. Definitely a lucky girl :-) .. My step father told us about when he was at school in Achill ,, he is 87 (I think) and how they had to walk to school with some Peat .. to put on the fire, and if they forgot it , I believe they had to walk all the way back and fetch it.

  3. Life sure goes full circle and we become our parents, saying some of the very things they said! Our children are Lucky~ Great picture Rhiannon!
