Fiery Food Festival

We spent some time this weekend in the beautiful old fashioned town of Morpeth. It is a real step back in time with its big wide main street, rickety wooden bridge and old style shop fronts. This weekend they had a food festival of all things hot and spicy.

Byron was in his element and went from tasting stall to tasting stall. We tried dips and relishes ranging in heat from 6 out of 10 to 14 out of 10?!  I enjoyed the chilli chocolate dip and Gareth enjoyed pretending to eat every one of these cloth "Chilli Man" displays that were hanging outside the different shops.

We really shouldn't laugh but one of the funniest things was watching a rather chubby rude boy push past everyone to grab the tasters. He got what he deserved when he stuffed something too hot in his mouth and stood there red faced and crying until one of the shop staff got him a cold drink. Our kids were whispering and giggling about it in the back of the car all the way home!

Boys and trees.

We got back to the car after a relaxing afternoon out and about. We all strap in and I do a quick head count as Byron turns the key in the ignition. We are 4. Gareth is missing. I get back out and see him happy as can be...

...climbing a tree!

Best Friends?!

Having described Gareth and Rhiannons relationship in a photo I thought I would try to do the same with Rhiannon and her older sister Sian...

Peas in a pod.

There is 2 1/2 years between Gareth and Rhiannon yet physically they are almost the same height and weight. They look so like twins sometimes. Their personalities are very in balance too. They are a mixture of wacky and sensitive and seem to be able to spend time together without rubbing each other up the wrong way.

Sian and Rhiannon are actually closer in age and being girls I assumed they would have more in common but when we first emigrated and had to put the three kids into two bedrooms the better solution was to let these two share.

I watched them this evening sitting in the same chair and laughing together as they played a new game on the iPad. I thought I might get away with sneaking a photo on my phone but Gareth looked up when I got too close. Now that we are settled in our new house they all have the luxury of their own rooms but I love that these two still end up spending lots of time together.

I know people keep warning me that the hardest part of parenting is yet to come. With Sian in High School already and Rhiannon moving up in January I know that change will inevitably come but I really hope some things will stay the same...

Scribbly Gum

We've been living here in Australia for 5 years now and have got used to a lot of the peculiarities around us. Every now and again something still catches my eye and makes me grin.

This is one of them. It is a type of gum tree called Scribbly Gum because of the funny scribbles left behind by a moth larvae. It is autumn here now and instead of shedding leaves the trees shed their bark exposing this crazy pattern!

I still struggle to get my head around the mixed up seasons. April should be spring not autumn!

Yet another peculiarity in our life Down Under!

Grateful

I found these photos on my phone this morning.
They are photos I took of a card Gareth wrote to the lady who sold us her sons trumpet. She had very kindly trusted us to borrow the trumpet for as long as we had needed to see if Gareth was enjoying it. After a few weeks we were happy to commit to it and paid her. Gareth was so excited that the trumpet was actually going to be his!
I love his handwriting and the little picture he drew under his name. It took me a while to work out that it was him blowing into the trumpet!

A wild weekend!

I hope I don't disappoint to many of you with the not so wild stories of what I got up to with the girls this weekend while Byron and Gareth were on their boys camping weekend!

Bear in mind that they are 10 and 13 and not quite old enough to paint the town red! As soon as the boys reversed down the driveway with a car full of camping equipment the girls set about getting dressed up, hair straightened and a bit of lip gloss on. We were going shopping! They wanted to go to a local factory outlet shop. It is busy and noisy and is not somewhere to go with dad and brother in tow! When we parked the girls were squealing with excitement. There were signs all over the windows advertising a $1 sale THIS WEEKEND ONLY!!!

They rummaged through clothes racks and made multiple trips to the changing room. Even though the clothes were $1 they fussed over the fit and styles as though they were shopping in a designer boutique. I expected them to buy lots but in the end Sian chose a lovely skirt (marked down from $25) and Rhiannon chose a whole outfit for $3, denim skirt, hot pink top and a cute woollen beanie hat. The hat hasn't come off her head all weekend. In face she still had it on when I checked on her in bed that night!

When we had shopped as much as we could bear we went outside to drive to the next location. Panic. No car. I went up and down, up and down the strip of car spaces with a growing sick feeling of panic in my stomach convinced that the car had been stolen. It took a little while to remember that Byron was driving my bright blue car and I had his small silver one. Duh!

We drove to another shopping centre where we did a bit more window shopping, ate some fast food and then finished off our evening with a trip to the cinema. I had booked the tickets on-line so we got to use the "Skip the Queue" roped off lane. The girls felt like VIP's as we walked down the red carpet strip to collect our tickets. The film was good and it was dark by the time we got out so it was straight to the car (we remembered which one to look for this time!) and headed home.

It was fun to have "just girls" time. I think we will be encouraging the boys to make this camping weekend a regular thing!

While the boys are away...

...what will the girls get up to?!
Byron and Gareth are just leaving to go to the Father/Son camping weekend.

The girls were all disappointed that they couldn't go.

Until I whispered my plans to them...!!!

The calm after the storm.

Yesterday was crazy. By 9pm I was propping my eyelids open with match sticks. Today was potentially busy. The list of jobs to do included helping out with reading at Gareth's school, waiting around for the fridge repair man and trying to book the car in for its "Pink slip" A legal safety check up you do before re-registering your car each year which actually happens to be a white paper print out?!

When the fridge man knocked on the door at 8am I was caught off guard. I was still in pj's, hair sticking up and the house was a dump because I was expecting him after I returned from the school run. Embarrassment levels high but convenience levels excellent because I now had one job crossed off my list.

When I finished reading with Gareth's class I stopped by the library, grabbed a random book and then dropped the car to the mechanic. He told me to come back in about half an hour. I turned on my selective deafness and decided he meant at least an hour because there was nothing else to do but walk down to the lake and sit under a tree and read!

Oh bliss. No housework, no grocery shopping, no errands to run. I was car-less and fancy free!

I love where I live.

If you will excuse me I have to go. I have a book to read!

Sydney Excursion.

The Excursion to Sydney was so much fun. Fifty 8 and 9yr olds, three teachers and eight parent helpers, 2 hours on a coach and multiple singing "Happy Birthday" at the top of their lungs to the three children who were celebrating their birthdays today! By the end I was wishing I had packed my earplugs!

We started at 7am at school. It was calm and quiet. We were one of the first there and the air was still and the sounds of the birds and the wind in the gum trees made it feel like we were the only people awake for miles around. Within 15 minutes the cars were pulling up fast and furious and unloading excited kids with rucksacks full of snacks and rain jackets. The noise had started and it wouldn't get any quieter for the next 9 hours!

I nabbed a seat next to my friend Karen. For our sanity we chose to let our kids sit next to their friends for the two hour trip to Darling Harbour. It was the best choice we made all day!

When we arrived the kids literally jumped off the bus in excitement. First stop was the Sydney Wildlife Centre which is affiliated with Lego to the delight of my group of boys "The Baynham 5"
Every fibreglass statue was a photo opportunity
Green lighting inside the exhibition was a chance to pretend to be zombies
The exhibits brought tiny moments of calm and wonder
followed closely by opportunities to be crazy and silly!
Not helped by the crazy mother who encouraged the kids to lie on the ground for a photo of the ceiling mirror reflection!
Back in the bus again...
Final stop was the top floor of the Sydney Tower where we had a birds eye view of the city
Made even more fun by the giant binoculars!
And finally the hair-raising walk back through the busy city streets to the bus. Trying hard not to lose anyone...
Back to the bus stop. All kids accounted for.
and finally homeward bound!

BIG glass of red wine required tonight after the kids are in bed!

A good note...

Gareth came home from school last week with a small crumpled post-it note. He held it tight in his hand and walked slowly up the driveway looking down at his feet. I could see he was fighting back a grin and so I played along.

"Mum, I've got some news from school. It's not so good"
"The school excursion helpers got pulled from a hat today......"
He looked slowly up at me
"...and you DID GET PICKED!"

He grinned from ear to ear and I pretended to be shocked and convinced that he was going to tell me I had not been chosen.

The excursion is tomorrow and we both can't wait!

You know you go to school in the bush when...

...you share your washbasins with the wildlife!

We're going camping!

A friend suggested that we try going camping over the school holidays. Nothing too fancy or far away. Just a weekend in a camp-site that is about 40mins drive away!

We got together for a cuppa and made our plans while the kids played. We all have small 2 man tents we bought a couple of years ago for the last camping weekend. Someone mentioned a great offer in the local Aldi. For one week only they were selling a 6 man tent for $49! We finished our coffee and decided we would go straight to Aldi to see if we could buy one.

We weren't the only ones to decide this. Our friends the Scanlons had the same plan. Only problem was that they were parked in front of us and were able to make a quicker get away down the driveway. We all pulled in to the supermarket car park together, parked and before the engines were off the doors were sprung open and we were all dashing hell for leather into the store. It was like supermarket dash as we raced around the aisles trying to find a tent. I found one first but fortunately Mark also found one nearby!

We laughed as we queued up to pay. I'm not sure what the man serving us was thinking about us as we paid out of breath and laughing. Then me with my mobile saying "smile" and saying I'd be blogging when I got home!
The camping weekend is still a few weeks away and so far at least 6 familes are booked in!
I'll be sure to let you know how it goes!

Dad says YES !!!

Any guess as to what news story this relates to?!

Here's the rest of the story...

Wife says no to an iPad 2… Apple says yes

275x250.jpg
A man who returned his iPad 2 to Apple along with a note saying "Wife said no" has been given it back free of charge, with a note saying "Apple said yes".

At least that's the story currently doing the rounds after it was posted on MacRumours and picked up by several news outlets.

Apple keep a record of the reasons people give if returning a product to an Apple store and it's claimed this one was circulated by amused employees.

When two Apple VPs heard the story they are said to have decided to ship the iPad 2 back to the customer as gift along with the "Apple said Yes" note.

While it's a great story if true, we're not sure if we believe it… and neither will your wife if you tell her Apple gave you your new toy gratis too.
